Tactic Sports Performance – New Home of the WGA’s Strength & Conditioning Program

Golfers in the Wildcat Golf Academy College Bound program will be training at Tactic Sports Performance, 1885 Holste Rd., in Northbrook.

Casey Tiesman is the owner and director of Tactic Sports Performance and will be assisting Scott Barthlama in the strength and conditioning of the golfers in the Wildcat Golf Academy’s College Bound program.

Tiesman graduated from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2012 with a Bachelors Degree in Kinesiology and followed that up with a Masters Degree in Kinesiology from the University of North Dakota in 2013.  As a graduate assistant at UND, he was the strength and conditioning coach for the baseball and softball teams, as well as having the opportunity to work with the football, basketball, track and field, and swimming programs.

Tiesman is a certified member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, along with Level I Sports Performance Coach. He has worked with hundreds of athletes and numerous professional athletes, including those in the NFL, MLB and triathlons.

Scott Barthlama Named Performance Director for the Wildcat Golf Academy

Scott Barthlama is the new Performance Director for the Wildcat Golf Academy. Barthlama will be fully immersed in Wildcat Golf as he was also named the Health and Performance Specialist for the Northwestern Men and Women’s Golf teams.

Barthlama worked at Northwestern from 1999 to 2008 as an athletic trainer with men’s and women’s golf as well as the men’s basketball team, while also serving as the strength and conditioning coach for the men’s basketball and golf programs.

“We are excited to have Scott as a member of the Wildcat Golf Academy staff,” said Sam McKenney, WGA Director of Player Development. “Scott has extensive knowledge working with golfers at all levels and abilities. The NU men and women’s golf teams experienced tremendous success while working with him and we expect our members to benefit from his experience as well.

During his tenure at NU, the men’s team won four Big Ten Championships and qualified for seven NCAA Championships, while advancing to the NCAA Finals four times. The women’s program reached the NCAA Regionals seven times during his time in Evanston.

Barthlama also worked with many players during their professional careers, including Luke Donald, Tom Johnson, Chris Wilson, Dillon Dougherty, David Merkow, Scott Harrington, Liliana Alvarez, and Jenny Lidback.

Barthlama spent seven seasons with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, where he most recently served as Head Athletic Trainer for the organization. He was involved in all aspects of health and performance for the Bucks players during his tenure in Milwaukee.

Most recently, Barthlama was the Director of Performance for S.T.R.O.N.G NBC TV, handling the medical healthcare and emergency healthcare for contestants competing in obstacle competitions, as well as being a consultant on strength and conditioning, nutrition, and recovery.

Barthlama received his M.S. in Athletic Medicine from the University of Oregon and his B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Northern Colorado.

WGA College Bound Players & Their Opportunity to Work with Renowned Biomechanist Ryan Lumsden

The Wildcat Golf Academy hosted Ryan Lumsden, the renowned biomechanist who is recognized internationally as the leading authority in 3-D biomechanical measurement and the practical application of collected data, for a one-day event with the WGA College Bound golfers this past weekend.

Each college bound player who took part in this event had their full swing analyzed by Ryan using a 12 sensor-capturing device. Over the next few days the WGA coaches and Ryan will discuss his findings in detail. These findings will allow the coaches to better assess the efficiency of each player’s swing and to design a long-term swing plan for the winter.

The WGA coaches will also use this information and apply it to each player’s physical evaluation performed by Scott Barthlama, the new Performance Director for the Wildcat Golf Academy, to outline the correlation between swing deficiencies and physical limitations.

The Biomechanical analysis allows our instructors, along with Ryan, to correlate the physiology of a player to how they swing. We can then prescribe gym exercises that reduce the risk of injury, as well as correct any swing movements that are putting excessive stress on joints or other parts of the body.
