Preparing for College Golf – Helpful Tips to Get You Started

Want to play college golf? Here are some helpful hints by Northwestern men’s assistant coach David Inglis, that will help get the process started.

• Do research on the schools you would like to contact.
• Be realistic about the schools you target – make an honest assessment of your golf and academic standards.
• Target schools that you will have an opportunity to play.  Look at the top three players currently on the team and ask yourself if you can reach that level.
• Send coaches an introductory e-mail including your tournament results, academic profile, contact information, instructors name and upcoming tournament schedule.  This should be done at the end of your sophomore year or beginning of your junior year in high school.  Just remember that coaches cannot respond until you start classes during your junior year
• Include videos of your swing in the e-mail as well. Include multiple down the line swings, face on, pitch and chip shots, bunker shots and putts. Audio is not necessary.
• The earlier and more often you take the SAT the better.
• Offer to make an unofficial visit.
• Send coaches regular updates on your progress
